Southern Cross Centre

February 2024 Update

Dear SCC Family,

Welcome back to your church family at Southern Cross Centre. We hope you’ve had a refreshing break and are energised to step into 2024.

The coming year will see significant changes in our church as pastors John and Alaine step down as our senior leaders, a role they have shared since the inception of Churchlands Christian Fellowship in May 1987.

Pastor Alaine will step down in early February and John will follow on 31 March, 2024. This should enable a smooth transition of leadership, allowing staff and volunteers to gradually shift into their new roles. John and Alaine plan to remain involved in Southern Cross Centre as part of the preaching team and the Elders Council. Fred Boshart will continue as chairman of the elders, accompanied by an expanded council comprised of Libby Ledger, Lea Lamberg and the McElroys.

For the foreseeable future, John and Alaine plan for greater involvement in the oversight and development of the Southern Cross Association of Churches.

  • On Sunday, February 11, we plan to honour Pastor Alaine at our morning service by taking a love offering and celebrating over a delicious community lunch. During the service, members of the SCC family will reflect on Alaine’s contribution within our leadership team over the years. Please plan to join us for this very special day.

  • On March 1-3, Southern Cross Centre will host an International Leaders’ Advance celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Southern Cross Association of Churches. Coincidentally, this is also the first time in 25 years that the Leaders’ Advance has been held in Perth. Over the years, SCAC has grown from 7 to over 300 members across Australia and internationally. We expect to host over 60 visitors who will attend this special weekend. There will six-daytime sessions held Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3, all open to our SCC family. Admission to this SCAC event is by registration only, please contact Marg Olsen for more details.
  • Finally, as announced by Pastor John in December, Kierohn Sims, our worship, youth and young adults pastor, will be moving his family to Perth in February 2024. Kierohn has been appointed for a six-month probationary period (scheduled to end in March), which will be extended for three months when Pastor John steps down as senior leader at the end of March. As required by our church constitution, SCC Members vote on Kierohn as our new senior leader on June 30 at our AGM (Annual General Meeting).
